Can I use the API or scrape the site?

What's allowed when using Jiten's public API, and what counts as abuse.

Updated

The API endpoints are publicly available and you're welcome to use them for personal projects, small-scale research, or tools that complement the learning experience. However, please don't bulk-scrape, crawl, or systematically download the site's data — for example, dumping every deck's vocabulary to mirror the database or build a competing service. Please respect the data licensing.

In short:

  • Personal projects, research, and hobby tools — go for it
  • Bulk downloading or mirroring significant portions of the database — not allowed
  • Reselling or paywalling access to Jiten itself or a relay of the API — not allowed

Commercial use of the data itself is a different question: decks, vocabulary and frequency lists you download normally are CC BY-SA licensed, so using them commercially is fine with attribution and share-alike.

The API may change at any time without notice and is rate-limited. If you're unsure whether your use case is okay, feel free to ask on Discord.
